Canadian eventing rider Andrina Calder
of Toronto, ON, chalked up yet another impressive victory in
her short career with a win in the Young Rider Preliminary Division
of the Over The Walls Horse Trials held August 1-3 in Hardwick,
MA.
Riding HerzPrinz, her 12-year-old
American Trakehner gelding, the 15-year-old competitor captured
the 33-horse field by finishing the competition on her dressage
score of 33.04 penalties. No jumping penalties and one of
the fastest rides in any of the four preliminary divisions
over the cross-country course designed by Olympic gold medallist
Torrance Watkins allowed Calder to maintain the lead.
In the stadium jumping phase, the pressure was
on as Calder could not afford to have a rail down. The skies
opened up just as Calder took to the field, but the downpour
did not distract her from the job at hand as she turned in
yet another penalty-free performance to capture the division
for athletes aged 21 and under.
Calder´s next competition will also mark
her first international team competition. Riding as a member
of the U.S. Area I Team, Calder will contest the North American
Young Riders´ Championship held August 20-24 in Bromont,
QC, site of the equestrian events for the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Calder comes into the North American Young Riders´
Championship on a hot streak. The win at Over The Walls marks
the fourth major victory for Calder so far in 2003. In May,
she won the CCIY* division of the Virginia Horse Trials in
Lexington, VA, and, one month earlier, she claimed the Young
Rider Open Preliminary division at the Beaulieu North American
Classic with an incredible score of 29.9 penalty points. Her
first victory of the year came in March when she topped the
Young Rider Open Preliminary division at the Rocking Horse
Spring Horse Trials in Altoona, FL.
Coached by United States Equestrian Team member
Darren Chiacchia, Calder trains south of the border at Chiacchia´s
Independence Farm with bases in Buffalo, NY, and Ocala, FL.
